Yfanwen is an original '1000 square foot' Lockwood, fully fitted, maintained and used as a family-sized alternative home. It sleeps six in three double bedrooms and in addition has a double bed-settee in the living room. The bunk-room has a cot available. For evenings-in there is Sky TV, including the four main Sky-Movies channels. In the kitchen the stove, fridge and microwave are new. In the laundry the washing machine is a recent model Gentle Annie. Linen is supplied and is freshly laundered for each booking. Lockwood houses are made of thick pine planks and are well known for good insulation. In the hot Bay of Islands summers the house is cool; the side facing the sea can be ventilated by ranchsliders and large awning-windows opening on to the deck.
Bay of Islands winters are mild, even compared to Auckland only 1 1/2 degrees latitude further south. The house is comfortable, warm and cosy with a modern, wood-burning space-heater using wood sourced from beneath the pines near the house. There is also a portable electric heater.
